There are few home improvement projects as exciting as painting; it’s an opportunity to transform your home, express your interests and personality, and of course, drastically boost your curbside appeal! That said, if you live within an HOA community, exterior painting isn’t always so simple – you’ll have to be mindful of your HOA’s rules and guidelines concerning exterior modifications. Continue reading below for a few tips to help you navigate the exterior painting process without upsetting your HOA or incurring any costly fines, while also ensuring fabulous results!
Tip #1. Do Your Homework Beforehand
As with any home project, you’ll want to be sure you’ve done your research beforehand and you know things like what type of paint to use, how to prepare your home, what other materials you need to purchase, and who you need to ask for help. However, if you live in an HOA community, there’s one other thing you’ll need to take care of: familiarizing yourself with your HOA’s guidelines.
While these guidelines may seem weird or arbitrary, they serve to help the entire neighborhood look and feel organized and harmonious. Most enforce rules include no bright or unusual colors, while promoting uniformity with the other homes in the neighborhood. Ultimately, they’re very easy to follow and plan around.
Tip #2. Ask for Permission
This is a simple step, but certainly not one you should neglect since exterior modification without permission can lead to costly fines, as well as the need to repaint! Normally, you can submit a written request to the appropriate member of your HOA board, detailing your plans and submitting any other requested information. They’ll let you know if there’s anything you need to alter, but if you’ve done your research beforehand and are staying compliant, this step is more of a formality than anything else.
Note that if you’re repainting your home the same color or replacing your roof using the same scheme, you normally shouldn’t need to submit your plans for review, as they’re already compliant.
Tip #3. Look to Your Neighbors for Inspiration
It’s true that most HOAs want homes to look somewhat similar in terms of color schemes, but they do not want homes to look completely identical to one another. This means you won’t be able to use the exact same color scheme as your next-door neighbors, for instance. However, after you’ve marked those colors off, you can still use them to inspire and influence your own plans. Aim to compliment the colors of their home with your own, or vice versa – you’ll be surprised at how much flexibility you’ll still have, even with limited options!
At the end of the day, exterior painting within an HOA community isn’t impossible by any means; it’s just a matter of doing your homework, asking for permission, and ensuring that your home meets all accepted standards. That said, you can always turn toward a team of professionals to guarantee spectacular results – and they’ll make sure your home’s new look is HOA-compliant, too!
