However, if you live in an HOA community, there’s one other thing you’ll need to take care of: familiarizing yourself with your HOA’s guidelines.

While these guidelines may seem weird or arbitrary, they serve to help the entire neighborhood look and feel organized and harmonious. Most enforce rules include no bright or unusual colors, while promoting uniformity with the other homes in the neighborhood. Ultimately, they’re very easy to follow and plan around.

Tip #2. Ask for Permission

This is a simple step, but certainly not one you should neglect since exterior modification without permission can lead to costly fines, as well as the need to repaint! Normally, you can submit a written request to the appropriate member of your HOA board, detailing your plans and submitting any other requested information. It’s true that most HOAs want homes to look somewhat similar in terms of color schemes, but they do not want homes to look completely identical to one another. This means you won’t be able to use the exact same color scheme as your next-door neighbors, for instance. Aim to compliment the colors of their home with your own, or vice versa – you’ll be surprised at how much flexibility you’ll still have, even with limited options!
