How Can I Make My Small Room Look Larger?
August 4, 2023
If you have a room in your home that is small but cozy, you might be looking for ways to make it feel a little more inviting and spacious. Fortunately, there are several tactics you can utilize to make even the smallest room feel more inviting and spacious, such as a fresh coat of paint, new furniture, and more. Continue reading below to learn a few useful tips about how to transform a small room or living space into a visually expansive sanctuary!
Tip #1. Choose Light Colors
Perhaps the most important and impactful tip here is using the right paint to create the illusion of space. A fresh coat of paint can work wonders here, and although you should avoid pure white, other lighter colors such as pastels and soft grays and tans can still trick the eyes into making the space feel roomier. Consider a light blue or green to expand a tiny bathroom, study, or kitchen, or a light gray to make a bedroom feel more inviting. Just take note that you may want to avoid gaudy or bright colors; neon pink is definitely a no-go!
Tip #2. Use Natural Lighting to Your Advantage
A dark room will inherently feel more enclosed than a well-lit room; conversely, a well-lit room can seem much more inviting, especially if it’s lit by natural light. Avoid heavy curtains that block light and opt for sheer or light-colored curtains that allow sunlight in. It’s also wise to orient lighting so that it sweeps broadly across different surfaces of a room.
Tip #3. Consider Adding Mirrors
Mirrors can create the illusion that a space is larger than it actually is; especially a large mirror that occupies most of one of the walls in a room. You can also strategically place them across from windows or walls to bounce light around the room, making it feel more open. Sometimes, mirrors are even included with pieces of furniture; these multi-functional pieces are also worth considering. And better yet—mirrors complement all varieties of paint colors!
Tip #4. Get Rid of Excess Clutter
Clutter can quickly make a small room feel very cramped and unwelcoming; fortunately, decluttering and organizing is a surefire solution. You can reduce clutter by investing in smart storage solutions, and you might also consider minimalistic furniture, or pieces with storage built in. Also try to keep your countertops, tables, or desks clean and free from unnecessary appliances, boxes, or décor. Simply put, the less clutter you have, the more spacious things will appear!
